While participating in Testosterone Replacement Therapy, red blood cell levels have been found to increase to unhealthy levels leading to higher blood viscosity and associated risks. Your physician will check your levels regularly to ensure they are maintained at an optimal level. If they reach an unhealthy level, your testosterone dose might be decreased or discontinued.
Those who are participating in TRT may be encouraged to donate blood in order to keep red blood cell levels optimal and viscosity within normal limits.
In order to collect your blood we must have a physician’s prescription, documentation of testosterone therapy and an appointment for the phlebotomy procedure. There are no fees for this service.
San Diego Blood Bank welcomes donors on TRT. At the time of your donation your hemoglobin/hematocrit and vitals will be measured during your private screening. As a qualified donor, your cholesterol level will be measured when your blood is tested for infectious diseases and be available for you to review online in your personal and confidential donor portal.
