Becky B. with her dog Sammy
Meet Becky B., a dedicated blood donor who was once hesitant to donate. Inspired by her mother and a student battling leukemia, she overcame her fears and has since donated various types of blood components. Becky's motivation soared when she learned her blood type, O positive, is universal. Her commitment to donation took on a new meaning when her dog Sammy faced a life-threatening situation.
Last November, Becky noticed a lump in Sammy's cheek, initially suspected as a tooth infection. The next day, a call from the vet revealed Sammy's dangerously low platelet count. With blood spots found where Sammy slept, it was clear he was experiencing spontaneous bleeding, a situation that could have been fatal without immediate intervention. Sammy was rushed to a veterinary hospital, where he received two blood transfusions that ultimately saved his life. This experience opened Becky's eyes to the critical need for pet blood donations, leading her to advocate for more pet owners to participate in blood donation programs.
In the spirit of National Pet Health Month, let's come together to ensure the health and happiness of pets and humans alike. Come enjoy the dog photo booth, food vendors, and raffle prizes at the event. Screen your dog or cat to see if they’re eligible for pet blood donation and then donate blood with San Diego Blood Bank.
Your contribution is not just a donation; it's a gift of life and love. Be a part of this incredible journey to save lives and make a lasting impact in the community. Let's save lives together!
